MindGames

Hi everyone! This is Lauren Richards posting, I'll be helping Celeste out with the blogging every now and then!

Today was the day of mind games. On a race like this they are fun to play on your teammates, frustrating when unwanted or warranted, or can be a total gift.

Have you ever heard of the story of Larry and Beth Galladoes? No? Really... because neither had Brandon Duggan. He commented on a sign that said this Larry and Beth adopted a section of a highway and was wondering about them. Without skipping a beat, Bev interjects "Wait, you've never heard about their story?" Incredulous, Duggan said that he hadn't. Bev then launches into a fantastic story of Larry and Beth's scandal of a love story, his fame as a painter, and I chimed in with comments about how my mom was watching an Oprah episode about the book written about it and how Larry was in my art history books...

Pretty good, huh?
Duggan thought so, too. He took it -- hook, line, and sinker. I'm still not sure if he knows if we were making it all up or not...

Another mind game played was the extra miles and hours that had to be put in. A six hour shift turned into an 8 hour tour, and was a 14 hour stretch for Rick and Carl.

Champs.

They get the gold stars of the day.
Rick powering through mile after mile.

My final mind game was driving through Sedona, Arizona. I couldn't believe that a place like this existed in America. I have just returned from spending a semester in Europe and was having a hard time believing that America could hold a candle to anything I'd seen.

Sedona made me beg to differ.

Craig coasting into Sedona.

My mind was blown by the unapologetic, raw beauty of the red rocks.

We'll be keeping you updated as the miles and games roll on!

What a great post, Lauren!! I just hopped over from your mom's blog. What a wonderful thing you're doing!! Such an incredible life experience!! I've heard Sedona is gorgeous and I hope to get there someday. Travel while you're young. Too many things get in the way once you start to get older. : )

Just a blog friend of your moms telling you that this was a great post. I loved the mind game story. I'm just mischievous enough to love to do that myself.

I used to live next door to Larry and Bev. It's quite a story to be sure, but they really are great folks. His art work is fabulous, but your photography is even better. Keep the stories coming and the miles racking up behind you. Love you all to bits!!
